How to add footnotes in WordPress—no plugins or HTML needed

Did you know that adding footnotes to your WordPress site just got way easier thanks to WordPress 6.3 “Lionel”? With this update—which was released in August 2023—you can now add footnotes right within the Paragraph block! No need to install a plugin anymore, or to create footnotes manually.

Footnotes are a great way to provide additional information or references without cluttering up your main content. Let me walk you through how to add them:

  1. Place your cursor after a word in a paragraph, heading, list or table.

  2. Click on the “More” arrow in the toolbar (highlighted in yellow):
  1. Then click on “Footnote”
  1. WordPress will automatically add a clickable number next to the word, like this1.
  2. The page will also automatically scroll down.
  3. At the bottom of the page, you’ll find the corresponding number and space to add your reference.

As you add more footnotes, WordPress makes sure everything stays in the right order. Plus, every reference comes with a handy back arrow. This arrow whisks you right back to where you put the reference in the first place. Very convenient!
